In order to play the game of darts you must understand and follow the dart regulations. There are many different regulations that vary from one country or club to another, but essentially these rules all have three main elements that should be kept in mind while playing a game of darts. Firstly there is the throw line, which is the distance between the darts when they are thrown. This will vary depending on the variation of the game you are playing, for example, if you are playing hook or forehand you will need to ensure that the throw line is long enough in order to allow your opponent to make a good throw. The second regulation is the landing zone, which is a very important part of dart throwing and a common mistake made by new players.
It is a common misconception for many people that the only regulation involved is the dart throw line. Different types of darts will have different landing zones, for example a disc will have a different landing zone than a bogie and in order to correctly throw a dart it must hit the board at a specific angle and speed. Another important part of dart regulations is the grip, which is made up of five fingers from either side of the paddle. These fingers are used to spread the weight of the hand on to the ball, the heavier the body of the hand the more effectively it will spread the weight of the arm on to the ball. Once the dart has been thrown, the hands must then remain on the handle or the grip for a minimum of 2 seconds.
One other regulation is that any time that a player drops a disc they must pick it up and throw it back in the opposite direction of their shot. This is to make sure that there is no one present within the ‘killing zone’ who may accidentally knock the disc into the group. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, there is the penalty, which is enforced by a loud, high pitched whistle that can be heard throughout the arena. Failure to acknowledge the warning label and to pick up the disc is a serious offence, and if done, the player will receive a yellow card which shows that they will have to leave the game. So, as you can see, there are a number of different rules governing the use of lawn darts. If you are planning on throwing your own darts at an upcoming event then be sure to check all of the lawn dart regulations beforehand.
