A Dartboard Guide
Dartboard is a game invented in Dartmouth College in the 1970s. DescriptionDarts or dart throwing is an indoor competitive sport where two or more persons each bare-handed throw small, sharp-tipped darts at a small round target called a dartboard. dartboard targets come in various sizes, designs, and configurations. Players are occasionally termed “dartboard players.” Most dartboard games played at indoor meets are divided into groups of four or five players.
A typical dartboard usually contains fifteen to twenty holes, arranged in a square pattern. Two sides of the board are commonly referred to as sisal fibres; these fibres are also used for padding the playing field and creating pockets on the board. There are also specially-made boards that contain no sisal fibres.
While most dartboards are made from acrylic, nylon, or polyurethane, many are made from wood such as cedar, oak, ash, maple, and birch. Acrylic and polyurethane dartboards are not recommended because they are more easily damaged by moisture and dirt than wooden dartboards. Cedar and oak dartboards are especially recommended for outdoor use. For indoor play, a sisal fiber board is preferred over acrylic or polyurethane boards.
Two types of dartboard scoring systems are used: the traditional point system and the universal point system. The traditional point system awards points based on the total number of darts remaining in the dartboard when the game is completed. In the universal system, points are awarded when the dartboard is empty. The inner wire of each dartboard is labeled with a particular number; therefore, each player knows which dartboard contains that number when it is crossed with the dart.
Scoring is done by counting the number of “heads” or “tails” hit by the dart. Each player has a set of ten marks to use for scoring. When a dart hits an “H” or an “O” it stops and a count is made. The players immediately know that a dart has passed through an inner “H” wire in the dartboard, and it becomes “out” (not eligible for scoring). Thus, each player receives ten marks for scoring.
All dart boards have two outer wires – one vertical and one horizontal – which are attached to the dart shafts. The inner wire of the dartboards separates the darts when they pass through the outer wires. It is possible to find dartboards that are made from synthetic fibers, but it is better to purchase ones made from pure sisal fibers. Pure sisal fibers are more durable and more shock absorbent.
